FAQs

Trudeau Yachts General FAQ

Q: How much do the Trudeau yachts cost?

A: There’s a wide variety of price points, from $1000L to $4500L. The cost is based primarily on size (like in RL ;) and also complexity.

Q: Can I get custom sails or hull colors? Or will you apply my graphic to a sail, flag or hull?

A: Creating custom graphics is time and labor intensive. Due to time constraints, we’re afraid  customization work is not available.

Q: You do boat naming? Do I just IM someone the name?

A: Please check out this page for naming details.

Q: I want to get a Trudeau yacht as a gift. Are they transferable?

A: No, they are not transferable – they are copy permissioned instead, as every SL vehicle needs to be. If you want to purchase for someone else, please use the “Buy as a Gift” option on our vendors. Or alternately, most of our yachts are available on xstreetsl.com and you can specify the recipient when purchasing from there.

Q: Do you charge for upgrades?

A: Never! From time to time we release updated versions of existing boats. Due to the fact that most customer’s boats, with their boat name graphic applied, are unique from every other boat on the grid we do not do automatic replacements. If you’ve had your boat for a while and think there might be a newer version available, contact Jacqueline Trudeau and we’ll drop the latest one on you. We will, however, have to charge a naming fee if you want your updated boat named as well.

Q: Can you build a custom boat to my specifications?

A: We’re afraid not. Each of our yachts takes weeks to months to realize. If you were to pay us real life rates for the time to build that new boat in SL, you’d be well on your way to having that same boat in real life ;)

Q: My boat sinks when I first rezz it. It didn’t used to.

A: This can happen when you save your boat back into inventory while it is in a physical (sailing) state. Find your boat at the bottom of the ocean… Right click and edit it. Uncheck Physical in the object tab. To prevent this from happening, make sure your boat is moored before you edit and save copies of it back into inventory.

Q: The HUD no longer appears on my screen. It used to, what happened?

A: It seems that if you “attach” the HUD rather than “wear” it, the HUD orients itself in reverse on your screen. It’s still there and responds with “Ready”, you just can’t see it as the back of the HUD is transparent. Once this happens, the HUD object remembers this orientation so even if you “wear” it in the future it will continue to display backwards. Annoying!

The best fix is pull a fresh copy of the HUD out of the original package the yacht came in. Rez it inworld and locate the “Trudeau HUD” object in it’s contents and drag it into your inventory. They will have the same names, so to avoid confusion it’s best to delete or rename the messed up HUD.

We recommend keeping the package your Trudeau yacht came in just in case you need to go back to the original parts for some reason. If you no longer have it, contact Jacqueline Trudeau inworld.

Trudeau Attachable Yacht FAQ

Q: Ride??? Attach??? What’s the deal with all these parts? Why can’t I just rez a boat, climb in and sail it?

A: Currently SL limits physics enabled objects, like vehicles, to a maximum of 31 linked prims. On top of that, each riding avatar counts as one linked prim so that pretty much limits the detail a modeler is able to put into their vehicle. However, prims that are worn by an avatar do not count against that limit. So we made the vehicle part (including the scripts, sails and avatar riding positions) of the boat well under 31 prims and the appearance part well over. Just think of that part of the boat like any other avatar attachment, such as shoes or prim hair. If you really just want a one piece vehicle, we make and sell those as well.

Q: Can I permission my partner/friend/group as skipper on the attachable yachts?

A: No, we’re afraid not. The Trudeau attachable yachts are like clothing or prim hair/shoes that you wear while sailing. In SL you must be the owner of a thing before you can wear it. However, the “rideable” Trudeau yachts do have a notecard allowing you to specify skippers who aren’t the boat owner.

Q: Why am I ending up with tons of copies of the (rez and sit) part of the boat in my inventory?

A: All parts of the boat are copy permissioned. When you rez them inworld, the original stays in your inventory. When done sailing, if you “take” the vehicle object, you are essentially making another copy of it in your inventory. Unless you are making changes to the boat with the set command, there is no need to save it back into your inventory – you can just delete the rez and sit portion from the world when you are finished your sailing session.

Q: I want to display the “boat” part of the boat next to my dock. How can I do that if I always have to attach it?

A: As long as you have the prim allowance available (depending on the boat, between 215 and 254) on your parcel, just drag the “Trudeau Yacht (wear)” object from your inventory into the world just like any other object. Once rezzed in the world this way, you can position and rotate it around to your liking. Please note that when you have it attached to your avatar, do NOT position or rotate it, as this will mess up the boat’s orientation to your sitting position (see next question).

Q: OK, I made the mistake of manually moving the boat attachment when it I was wearing it. It’s easy to do. Now whenever I attach it, it is crooked and not lined up. Now what?

A: Yes, agreed – it is easy to do. You can painstakingly re-align it or try this (it’s easier): rez the original packaging your boat came in. Locate the “Trudeau Yacht (wear)” object in it’s contents and drag it into your inventory. They will have the same names, so to avoid confusion, it’s best to delete or rename the messed up copy.

As all pieces of the yachts are modify permissioned, we recommend keeping the package your Trudeau yacht came in, just in case you need to go back to the original parts for some reason (see next question).

Q: As soon as I rez the “Rez and Sit” object inworld, it takes off on it’s own and skitters away. What do I do now?

A: Yes, that phenomenon has been reported and we have observed it, but have not been able to replicate to figure out what’s going on and fix it. In the meantime, what advice we can offer is delete (or rename) the “Rez and Sit” object from your inventory that is showing that behavior, and replace it with a fresh copy from the original package the yacht came in.

Q: The boat looks great rezzed inworld, but there are no poseballs – where do I sit on it?

A: There are various places on the boat with sit scripts and animations embedded in them. Try sitting on all of the cushions, above and belowdecks, the decks around cockpit, the pillows on the berths.

Q: I get stuck trying to get in  and out of the boat.

A: That’s a question? ;) Admittedly, the belowdecks accomodations are a tad cozy (but what sailboat, in any life, isn’t?). SL makes it even more difficult. In RL boats most cabin soles are below the waterline, but if we did that in SL, you’d be up to your ankles or knees in the wet stuff as prims don’t displace water ;) You may find it easiest to enter the boat by sitting on the belowdecks cushions and exit by sitting on something outside the boat, such as the cockpit cushion or deck.

Q: I gave the command to change the color of the boat when it was rezzed next to my dock but nothing happened. Why?

A: To reduce sim lag, the boat is scripted to listen to commands only while it is attached to you. Just attach it, issue the set color command, detach it, then rez it – it will now have your selected color.

Q: So I sat on the rez and sit part, I attached the wear part, I have the HUD on the screen, but nothing is happening – the boat isn’t responding to the HUD.

A: Make sure you sat on the “skipper” poseball (the red one). When attaching the HUD sync you should have seen this message in the chat history:

HUD channel set.

Q: Data on the HUD doesn’t seem to be updating

A: Are you located in a parcel that has script execution disabled (look for the little document with a slash through it icon up on the SL client’s menu bar)? Or you may just be experiencing SL lag in action.

Q: The boats are supposed to be modify permissioned but they say “No modify” in my inventory. Why is that?

A: The “No modify” comes from the boat object’s embedded scripts which are no modify. However the prims that make up the boat are completely modable - retexurable, colorable, etc. (are those words??? lol!)

Hi, is there a way to disable Race Wind after the boat has “caught” it.

  2. I have a question that I did not see here. Why does the prims of the boat vanish when rez’d for the first time?. it can be rez again.. but the boat is not invisible.. leving only cushions suspended in air.

  3. 3 jacquelinetrudeau

Sonic, currently not. The only option is to sail out of the windsetter’s range. I’ve been getting this question a lot – I may make an option to ignore racewind (even if that opens the potential for regatta racers to ahem… cheat a little? :) )

Chaini, I’m not sure. Is that an intermittent condition? It could be SL lag. Also I’ve had trouble with random prim dropout using the Windlight viewer. I’ll contact you inworld.

  4. 4 Fred McGiven

I would like to set sail from my water lot with one of your attachable yachts. My question is:
When I set sail with the yacht do I need the whole 200 plus prims available on my property? Or do I just need the prims (31 or less) for the non-wearable part of the boat?

  5. 5 Caf Binder

    Hi!
Would you please send me or make available here a texture with the default “Defender II – Eggar” name? I mean a .TGA file that would be a sample for us to build ours on?
What also could help would be the UUID of that one.
And still another way would be specifying it a little, as if it is a 512×512 pixel targa image, and some more data.
This would help us a lot to avoid frustrating uploads to SL.
    Thanks!

  6. 6 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Caf, yes, I’ll put up the TGA that makes up the Defender name. Check back a little later.

As described in the FAQ, I design it with the text in an alpha background as to not obscure the user-selected hull color texture.

Additionally, there are two versions of the name on the graphic – one with the text outlined in black and the other outlined in white. It’s all for display and legibility. An llOffsetTexture script changes which text version is visible when you select from the yacht color options. Light color hulls display the black outlined name, darker hulls display the white outlined text.

Now I’m giving away my trade secrets here!

  7. 7 Nectere

I keep seeing the hud say HelpSail setting off, is there a way to turn it on?

  8. 8 Caf Binder

    Hi again Jacqueline! :-)

I am waiting for that texture to be used and modified in RL… a download here would be superb! But I come back with another, added suggestion, maybe this one not being that bad to your trade secrets. :-)

You see, the Defender had an white color option. I used that and then added color to it to get to my specific desired hull color. (Now I see ive changed the wood parts colors too… bad…)

The Tradewind, on the other hand, has no white option, so you just cant ‘tint’ the hull.

Since you dont (I think) make profit tinting hulls, a very nice thing to give us, customers, would be some textures, given in RL, high res (1024×1024, I guess), specially the ones used on those hulls.

What do you think about? :-)

    Hugs

    ()s CAF

PS: I can help putting them in a general public format, if you want. (as a thanking, for free, of course) Just send them to my email and tell me what you want.

  9. 9 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi, Caf! True, I don’t make any money on hull mods :) However a retexture for Tradewind involves about a dozen different images (stem, keel, rudder, sternpost, transom, several individual graphics over various parts of the hull itself). When I get some spare time, I’ll look into making up a package of “vanilla” templates. These would be PSDs as there are several layers of detailing on each one. Then of course, I’ll need to figure out a hosting location to make them available. :)

  10. 10 Aquarius Paravane

@7 – I second that, I have read every document and have not found out how to turn on / off helpsail.

  11. 11 SM Thibaud

Hi – how about H4, the new physics engine? Will it impact your boats?

  12. 12 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi SM. There are a few quirks, no showstoppers as LL calls it. The most annoying seems to be a jerkiness in the angular motor (which controls the heeling and rise and fall on a swell motion). It has also been reported that contact with an inworld avatar will stop the boat. These have been JIRAed and hopefully will be addressed by LL soon.

  13. 13 jacquelinetrudeau

Oh , about those who commented on helpsail – that is feature of the attachable boats that displays a little extra info on the HUD – the ideal sail set, etc. The next update will remove that bit of extraneous chat from the ridable boats.

  14. 14 Rmike Javelin

Jacqueline- please delete or disregard #14- I’ve read more, and found several launching/sailing areas. However- I would like some help with my Sojourner HUD…. I’m unable to edit the width. Using the stretch both sides, etc. – when Ctrl-Shft is used, there are no horizontal stretch handles, only upper and lower corners. I understand this may nothing to do with your work, just wondering if you know of this.

  15. 15 Bitova Loon

Jacqueline – read thru the FAQs and note cards but am unable to find the answer to this .. How do I set a Friendship Sloop to use Second Life Wind again

/1 set wind sets the “artificial wind” speed, direction variation etc .. I cant see how to go back to SL wacky wind :)

  16. 16 Bitova Loon

Second Question :) It “seems” that now in Havoc4 I cant get the Friendship to Start sailing from a dead stop / moored situation .. I am not the worlds best Sailor I know .. I am sat here facing East, I have just done a /1 set wind 180 10 and as expected the HUD is showing the wind nicely from astern – HUD (using EZsail Hud) says “dead run” .. so i let out sails to 50 degrees(ish) and I just sit there …

lower Sails .. start motor (/1 motor on) tap up key, just get going.. wait a few seconds do a /1 motor off and put up sails and we are away :)

Lower sails and moor.. raise sales and again sit still in the “doldrums” until I bump the boat with the motor to get it moving

  17. 17 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Bitova, I’ll contact you inworld

  18. Hi Jacqueline

I am having trouble getting a Friendship Sloop to “goosewing” on a dead or training run. With mains’l set, if I try to oppose the jib and stays’l, they just luff.

    Advice please..

  19. 19 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Grey, I’ll contact you inworld

  20. 20 Wolf Brannan

there way put in a tiny friendly pose for the skipper possition? (course then have to find such pose :)
    Thanks

  21. 21 Expedition Offcourse

Hello Jacqueline, I love your Beach Cat. I’m currently making some modifications to the prims, which makes the overall boat slightly larger. To account for that, I have to move the sit targets a little bit. I saw that the sit target script in the root prim was “no modify”. May I ask you for a modify version of JUST that script? If you have some reservations about that, could you contact me in world? Thanks in advance.

    -Ex

  22. I see on some of the larger yachts you can add poseballs, what is your smallest boat that is available on.

  23. 23 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Fenn, all of the boats are mod permissioned, so you could add your own poseballs. Do keep in mind the maximum linked prim count is 31. Another alternative would be add the animation and a poseball script (to adjust the avatar offset and rotation) directly into one of the boat prims itself. That’s how I handle the passenger animations on the smaller (non-attachable) boats. – JT

  24. 24 Marnee Bazno

Can someone tell me if the innder cabin can be used on the Tahit Ketch, or the Trudeay 32 sloop?
I wish to buy, but not if I can’t use the inner cabin

  25. 25 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Marnee. No, those 2 boats do not have enterable cabins. The only “rideable” boat that has one is the Knockabout. Otherwise, all the attachable models have cabins you can use when the boat is displayed/moored

  26. 26 baba mubble

jac… this is all fantastic… very new to me… am a sailor, but not in sl… 1) are there some sort of basic lessons available with an instructor to shorten the first curve in learning? 2) where do i find charts?? i’d love to get an overview of where i am and could go if i buy a boat… the water world in sl is currently not clear to me…. 3) are there rentals to try? 4) is it possible to keep the boat in a slip somewhere, or maybe marina memberships???? o i can hop on and go

sorry for the basics… i read the faq’s you have and while they’re really informative, they are past where i am at this point… thanks!!!

  28. 28 Cherokee Darwin

    Hi Jacq,

I am the proud owner of a Trudeau Twenty and I understand that the hull is phantom and uses an invisible prim to support standing in the boat. What I’m a little unclear on is why that invisible prim needs to be derezzed when sailing her. I run into trouble sometimes when mooring in certain protected waters… my passengers and I fall through the boat when we stand up because the region doesn’t allow the invisible prim to be rerezzed. Could you shed some light on why it needs to be derezzed at all?

    Thanks much!

    Cherokee

  29. 29 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi, Cherokee – a couple of reasons. Since it is not attached to the boat, it doesn’t follow you around. If it were not derezzed, you’d leave a trail of invisiprims across the grid as you moor and cast off. Secondly, and probably most importantly, when the boat is in it’s physical state (while sailing) if it comes in contact with a non-phantom object (such as the invisiprims), it completely halts your progress. Even worse, if the non-phantom object occupies the same space as your boat (as the invisiprims do when moored) when it becomes physical (when casting off), the results are very interesting. Think of the equivalent of RL getting hung up on a hidden reef or rock ledge :) I could demonstrate inworld sometime.

  30. 30 Bitova Loon

Jacqueline – does the leetle cat or the Friendship work with the new WWC Windsetter from Mothgirl Dibou ?? I think from reading the help on the WWC setter if I refuse the race settings I should get cruise settings .. or should I stay with the SLSF windsetter ?

    Thanks B

  31. 31 Bitova Loon

Ohh I forgot to also ask do they respond to the wave and current “fuctions” of this new windsetter ?

  32. 32 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Bitova, as far as I know the WWC windsetter is backwards compatible with the SLSF windsetter and as such should work with the Trudeau fleet. None of my boats have logic in them for decoding anything other than wind parameters.

  33. 33 Bitova Loon

    Thanks jacqueline :)

  34. 34 Nhile Fuller

Hi. My Trudeau boat doesn’t seem to work anymore. Is there any update for it? Hope to hear from you.

  35. I just got a Trucordia Yawl and I love it!! Only problem.. I can’t figure out how to keep the boom aligned with the sail. Here is a picture of the problem.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/diamondmarchant/3844829488/

I find that lowering and raising the sails fixes the problem temporarily. I have also unpacked the yawl a second time and that did not help.

Is there anything I can do to keep the sail attached to the boom? Also, when the sail and boom are not aligned, what is the true sail angle, the sail or the boom?

    Thanks

p.s. I used your instructions for installing a custom name texture on the stern and it worked perfectly :)

    • 36 jacquelinetrudeau

hi diamond, both the sail and boom are indepenednt prims containing scripts that rotate them. The rotation instructions are sent out to both prims on your set sail commands. In cases of laggy conditions, the two can become “unsynched”. The true sail angle is what is reported on your HUD as that is sent from the script that actually acts on that value. Is this happening to you regularly?

  36. 37 deci Dojoji

    hello there!
i have a question regarding the Tradewind. i noticed that the attached part of the ship tends to “bounce” up and down slightly with the avatar while the physical vehicle part (on which you sit) stays in place, making it look very odd while sailing. it mostly happens while turning left/right.

since i slightly modified my Tradewind i thought i might have broken something, but after unpacking a fresh version out of the box, it still has this bouncing “bug” to it.

i have detached all AOs, HUDs, anything and can’t figure out if its just me, or a known “bug”, because i own some other attach/sit vehicles that doesnt have this bouncing.

ps: besides that little annoyance, i love your work and also am a proud owner of the bluewater and j-class :)

    • 38 jacquelinetrudeau

Hi Deci, the boat does have a slight “pitching” motion underway, but that effects the entire boat – vehicle, avatar and attachment. Are you sure you have all scripted attachments , include AOs, turned off?

      • 39 deci Dojoji

        hey there,
after doing some more testing i was able to figure out that this “bouncing” i am experiencing seems to be directly connected to the animate script in the physical vehicle part that triggers the skipper’s animation of wheel turning.

while sitting on the rez and sit part and having the tradewind attached, deleting the “animate” script from the object makes the bouncing “bug” disappear completely (the animations too of course :) ).
side-effect: after standing up and sitting down again the skipper wont be able to get into the correct sitting position which will make the attachment look displaced to the sails.

also i asked friends if they was able to see this bouncing too, and they confirmed it, just to make sure i am not the only one who sees this :)

as to why this happens, i have no idea. maybe my avatar has some unusual size/shape , that makes the transition of different skipper animations go buggy.
