FAQs

Trudeau Yachts General FAQ

Q: Nothing happens when I try and sail.

A: Did you see the “ready” message from the boat after rezzing it? If not, you might be located in a parcel that has script execution disabled (look for the little document with a slash through it icon up on the SL client’s menu bar).  Did you see the “Welcome aboard, Skipper <your name>” prompt after boarding?  If not, you probably ended up sitting in a crew position rather than the skipper’s.  Check the Skipper and Crew Sit Locations graphic in your “Sailing your…” notecard. Try “sitting” directly on the boat’s tiller or steering wheel.

Q: I’m getting this error: Could not find animation ‘00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000’

A: This is resolved by clearing your viewer’s cache and restarting.

Q: My avatar runs, rather than walks, after sailing your boats.

A: Check your viewer’s Preferences – Move & View – Movement page.  If Tap-tap-hold to run is checked, uncheck that.

Q: How much do the Trudeau yachts cost?

A: There’s a wide variety of price points, from $1500L to $4500L. The cost is based primarily on size (like in RL ;) and also complexity.

Q: Can I get custom sails or hull colors? Or will you apply my graphic to a sail, flag or hull?

A: Creating custom graphics is time and labor intensive. Due to time constraints, we’re afraid customization work is not available.  However we do publish texture templates in PSD format for most boat parts for you DIYers. Please check the individual boat pages for download links.

Q: You do boat naming? Do I just IM someone the name?

A: Please check out this page for naming details.

Q: I want to get a Trudeau yacht as a gift. Are they transferable?

A: No, they are not transferable – they are copy permissioned instead, as every SL vehicle needs to be. If you want to purchase for someone else, please use the “Buy as a Gift” option on our vendors. Or alternately, most of our yachts are available on the SL Marketplace and you can specify the recipient when purchasing from there.

Q: Do you charge for upgrades?

A: Never!  The boats have a built-in update checking and from time to time we release updated versions of existing boats.  The update will deliver your new boat automatically.  Sometimes our update server is asleep at the switch and you will not get the update (shakes fist at update server!) In that case, contact Jacqueline Trudeau inworld and we’ll drop the latest one on you.

Q: Can you build a custom boat to my specifications?

A: We’re afraid not. Each of our yachts takes weeks to months to realize. If you were to pay us real life rates for the time to build that new boat in SL, you’d be well on your way to having that same boat in real life ;)

Q: My boat sinks when I first rezz it. It didn’t used to.

A: This can happen when you save your boat back into inventory while it is in a physical (sailing) state. Find your boat at the bottom of the ocean… Right click and edit it. Uncheck Physical in the object tab. To prevent this from happening, make sure your boat is moored before you edit and save copies of it back into inventory.

Q: The HUD no longer appears on my screen. It used to, what happened?

A: It seems that if you “attach” the HUD rather than “wear” it, the HUD orients itself in reverse on your screen. It’s still there and responds with “Ready”, you just can’t see it as the back of the HUD is transparent. Once this happens, the HUD object remembers this orientation so even if you “wear” it in the future it will continue to display backwards. Annoying!

The best fix is pull a fresh copy of the HUD out of the original package the yacht came in. Rez it inworld and locate the “Trudeau HUD” object in it’s contents and drag it into your inventory. They will have the same names, so to avoid confusion it’s best to delete or rename the messed up HUD.

We recommend keeping the package your Trudeau yacht came in just in case you need to go back to the original parts for some reason. If you no longer have it, contact Jacqueline Trudeau inworld.

Q: I get stuck trying to get in  and out of the boat.

A: That’s a question? ;) Admittedly, the belowdecks accommodations are a tad cozy (but what sailboat, in any life, isn’t?). SL makes it even more difficult.  You may find it easiest to enter the boat by sitting on the belowdecks cushions and exit by sitting on something outside the boat, such as the cockpit cushion or deck.

Q: Data on the HUD doesn’t seem to be updating

A: Are you located in a parcel that has script execution disabled (look for the little document with a slash through it icon up on the SL client’s menu bar)? Or you may just be experiencing SL lag in action.

Q: The boats are supposed to be modify permissioned but they say “No modify” in my inventory. Why is that?

A: The “No modify” comes from the boat object’s embedded scripts which are no modify. However the prims that make up the boat are completely modable – retexurable, colorable, etc. (are those words??? lol!)

I have a question that I did not see here. Why does the prims of the boat vanish when rez’d for the first time?. it can be rez again.. but the boat is not invisible.. leving only cushions suspended in air.

Sonic, currently not. The only option is to sail out of the windsetter’s range. I’ve been getting this question a lot – I may make an option to ignore racewind (even if that opens the potential for regatta racers to ahem… cheat a little? :) )

Chaini, I’m not sure. Is that an intermittent condition? It could be SL lag. Also I’ve had trouble with random prim dropout using the Windlight viewer. I’ll contact you inworld.

I would like to set sail from my water lot with one of your attachable yachts. My question is:
When I set sail with the yacht do I need the whole 200 plus prims available on my property? Or do I just need the prims (31 or less) for the non-wearable part of the boat?

    Hi!
Would you please send me or make available here a texture with the default “Defender II – Eggar” name? I mean a .TGA file that would be a sample for us to build ours on?
What also could help would be the UUID of that one.
And still another way would be specifying it a little, as if it is a 512×512 pixel targa image, and some more data.
This would help us a lot to avoid frustrating uploads to SL.
    Thanks!

Hi Caf, yes, I’ll put up the TGA that makes up the Defender name. Check back a little later.

As described in the FAQ, I design it with the text in an alpha background as to not obscure the user-selected hull color texture.

Additionally, there are two versions of the name on the graphic – one with the text outlined in black and the other outlined in white. It’s all for display and legibility. An llOffsetTexture script changes which text version is visible when you select from the yacht color options. Light color hulls display the black outlined name, darker hulls display the white outlined text.

Now I’m giving away my trade secrets here!

    Hi again Jacqueline! :-)

I am waiting for that texture to be used and modified in RL… a download here would be superb! But I come back with another, added suggestion, maybe this one not being that bad to your trade secrets. :-)

You see, the Defender had an white color option. I used that and then added color to it to get to my specific desired hull color. (Now I see ive changed the wood parts colors too… bad…)

The Tradewind, on the other hand, has no white option, so you just cant ‘tint’ the hull.

Since you dont (I think) make profit tinting hulls, a very nice thing to give us, customers, would be some textures, given in RL, high res (1024×1024, I guess), specially the ones used on those hulls.

What do you think about? :-)

    Hugs

PS: I can help putting them in a general public format, if you want. (as a thanking, for free, of course) Just send them to my email and tell me what you want.

Hi, Caf! True, I don’t make any money on hull mods :) However a retexture for Tradewind involves about a dozen different images (stem, keel, rudder, sternpost, transom, several individual graphics over various parts of the hull itself). When I get some spare time, I’ll look into making up a package of “vanilla” templates. These would be PSDs as there are several layers of detailing on each one. Then of course, I’ll need to figure out a hosting location to make them available. :)

Hi SM. There are a few quirks, no showstoppers as LL calls it. The most annoying seems to be a jerkiness in the angular motor (which controls the heeling and rise and fall on a swell motion). It has also been reported that contact with an inworld avatar will stop the boat. These have been JIRAed and hopefully will be addressed by LL soon.

Using the stretch both sides, etc. – when Ctrl-Shft is used, there are no horizontal stretch handles, only upper and lower corners. I understand this may nothing to do with your work, just wondering if you know of this.

Second Question :) It “seems” that now in Havoc4 I cant get the Friendship to Start sailing from a dead stop / moored situation .. I am not the worlds best Sailor I know .. I am sat here facing East, I have just done a /1 set wind 180 10 and as expected the HUD is showing the wind nicely from astern – HUD (using EZsail Hud) says “dead run” .. so i let out sails to 50 degrees(ish) and I just sit there …

lower Sails .. start motor (/1 motor on) tap up key, just get going.. wait a few seconds do a /1 motor off and put up sails and we are away :)

Lower sails and moor.. raise sales and again sit still in the “doldrums” until I bump the boat with the motor to get it moving

Hello Jacqueline, I love your Beach Cat. I’m currently making some modifications to the prims, which makes the overall boat slightly larger. To account for that, I have to move the sit targets a little bit. I saw that the sit target script in the root prim was “no modify”. May I ask you for a modify version of JUST that script? If you have some reservations about that, could you contact me in world? Thanks in advance.

Hi Fenn, all of the boats are mod permissioned, so you could add your own poseballs. Do keep in mind the maximum linked prim count is 31. Another alternative would be add the animation and a poseball script (to adjust the avatar offset and rotation) directly into one of the boat prims itself. That’s how I handle the passenger animations on the smaller (non-attachable) boats. – JT

    Hi Jacq,

I am the proud owner of a Trudeau Twenty and I understand that the hull is phantom and uses an invisible prim to support standing in the boat. What I’m a little unclear on is why that invisible prim needs to be derezzed when sailing her. I run into trouble sometimes when mooring in certain protected waters… my passengers and I fall through the boat when we stand up because the region doesn’t allow the invisible prim to be rerezzed. Could you shed some light on why it needs to be derezzed at all?

    Thanks much!

Hi, Cherokee – a couple of reasons. Since it is not attached to the boat, it doesn’t follow you around. If it were not derezzed, you’d leave a trail of invisiprims across the grid as you moor and cast off. Secondly, and probably most importantly, when the boat is in it’s physical state (while sailing) if it comes in contact with a non-phantom object (such as the invisiprims), it completely halts your progress. Even worse, if the non-phantom object occupies the same space as your boat (as the invisiprims do when moored) when it becomes physical (when casting off), the results are very interesting. Think of the equivalent of RL getting hung up on a hidden reef or rock ledge :) I could demonstrate inworld sometime.

I just got a Trucordia Yawl and I love it!! Only problem.. I can’t figure out how to keep the boom aligned with the sail. Here is a picture of the problem.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/diamondmarchant/3844829488/

I find that lowering and raising the sails fixes the problem temporarily. I have also unpacked the yawl a second time and that did not help.

Is there anything I can do to keep the sail attached to the boom? Also, when the sail and boom are not aligned, what is the true sail angle, the sail or the boom?

    Thanks

p.s. I used your instructions for installing a custom name texture on the stern and it worked perfectly :)

hi diamond, both the sail and boom are indepenednt prims containing scripts that rotate them. The rotation instructions are sent out to both prims on your set sail commands. In cases of laggy conditions, the two can become “unsynched”. The true sail angle is what is reported on your HUD as that is sent from the script that actually acts on that value. Is this happening to you regularly?

    hello there!
i have a question regarding the Tradewind. i noticed that the attached part of the ship tends to “bounce” up and down slightly with the avatar while the physical vehicle part (on which you sit) stays in place, making it look very odd while sailing. it mostly happens while turning left/right.

since i slightly modified my Tradewind i thought i might have broken something, but after unpacking a fresh version out of the box, it still has this bouncing “bug” to it.

i have detached all AOs, HUDs, anything and can’t figure out if its just me, or a known “bug”, because i own some other attach/sit vehicles that doesnt have this bouncing.

ps: besides that little annoyance, i love your work and also am a proud owner of the bluewater and j-class :)

Hi Deci, the boat does have a slight “pitching” motion underway, but that effects the entire boat – vehicle, avatar and attachment. Are you sure you have all scripted attachments , include AOs, turned off?

        hey there,
after doing some more testing i was able to figure out that this “bouncing” i am experiencing seems to be directly connected to the animate script in the physical vehicle part that triggers the skipper’s animation of wheel turning.

while sitting on the rez and sit part and having the tradewind attached, deleting the “animate” script from the object makes the bouncing “bug” disappear completely (the animations too of course :) ).
side-effect: after standing up and sitting down again the skipper wont be able to get into the correct sitting position which will make the attachment look displaced to the sails.

also i asked friends if they was able to see this bouncing too, and they confirmed it, just to make sure i am not the only one who sees this :)

as to why this happens, i have no idea. maybe my avatar has some unusual size/shape , that makes the transition of different skipper animations go buggy.

      Hi Lmoth,

As you have noticed, the texture on LCII’s boom is not fixed. The reason being is that prim texture (and shape) is scripted to morph to accommodate not only the boom but, when reefed, the reefed sail folds as well. The sail texture kit includes the template to color your reefed sail folds to match your custom sail, but it was assumed the boom stays the same – which is why it goes back to built-in boom texture when not reefed.

The answer to your issue is include a boom texture template and to modify the custom texture loader script to look for that as well. Look for that in a future update.

Hello! I am a new sailor and purchased the Trudeau T12. It is so much fun learning how to sail on this boat! My partner loved it too, so he bought the Rozinante boat last night. We love it but are a bit surprised and disappointed that it does not include this feature, “Our exclusive Tru-Sail feature as first introduced on the Trudeau One. The sails flap, luff and fill to give inworld visual indication of correct sail set. No HUD angle sail by numbers… no color codes… no big inworld dials… just realistic true to life sail behavior.”

Will you be adding this feature to the Rozinante, and will an upgrade be free or need to be purchased anew?

Thanks for making great boats! I am loving it!!

Did you follow this procedure from the “Sailing the…” card:

      *******************************************************************************************
If you want to drop a copy of the HUD on someone else so that they may help you sail her as described above in “Skipper and Crew”, please do the following.

      1. Rez the HUD inworld.
      2. You will see the message on the chatline “Trudeau HUD (‘s boat): Channel burned in for ”
      3. Take the HUD back into inventory.
      4. The HUD will now be titled “Trudeau HUD (‘s boat)
      5. Give that copy of the HUD to your crewmember (explain to them it’ll be good for *your* boat only)
      *******************************************************************************************
